When managing a project it is so important to be yourself. There were many occasions in the past when builders hadn’t turned up when they were supposed to. I was told by family members if you don’t sort them out I will or I want to hear the anger in your voice when you speak to them. But I didn’t because it wasn’t me so dealt with issues in my own way. I would explain what we had discussed, refer back to our written agreements and say what I would like to improve.
My thing is speaking to people in a way that I would like people to speak to me, showing respect and having a clear plan. One of my tradesmen actually said how one client he was working for spoke to him in such a rude manner and coming to my project was so nice that he refused to continue working for the other client.
Being myself has helped me grow a trustworthy team that has mutual respect and always aims to exceed my expectations. I wanted to share this, as project managing does not require you to come across in a way that doesn’t fit with the type of person you are. Yes you may have to have uncomfortable conversations if you are not happy with aspects of your project however this can be done YOUR way.
